The Democratic Political Realities of Iraq are a Real Bitch

June 20, 2007

All discussion on the politics of the occupation of Iraq is now moot. When Jon Stewart, Letterman and Leno are cracking jokes about the Democrats being a bunch of do-nothing cowards almost every night, the political reality has become that in the eyes of the people the responsibility for Iraq now belongs to the Democrats. Every day that the status quo remains unchanged and the Democrats are still in the majority only reinforces that belief. Words have affect. Words are why the Democrats have a majority, namely the words that promised us a swift end to this occupation. Politically speaking, the Democrats have one and only one alternative to protect their political future; do whatever they can to bring our troops home as soon as possible. That’s not going to come about through traditional political maneuvering. The drive to end the occupation of Iraq isn’t like passing a minimum wage bill. Make no mistake about it, this battle is tantamount to Gettysburg and the way things are going it’s looking like the Confederates are going to be issuing an un-Emancipation Proclamation.

Proposing to spend one’s time trying to convince Republicans to do what’s in the best interest of the country at the expense of their political futures is beyond naive. If the Democrats want a political victory they can put on their grown-up pants, come to grips with the fact that they are not going to be handed the Republican votes necessary to overturn Bush’s veto and shut down Washington if they have to in order to bring our troops home. Which would not only be good for our country and politically brilliant for the Democrats, it is in point-of-fact right now, the only option for ending this occupation.

Republican strategy has always been that when faced with despairing loss and the tremendously horrific consequences of their politic actions, they merely blame-away their deficiencies on the Democrats. That strategy has guided them for years. Why on Earth at this point in the greatest domestic political conflict since Vietnam would a Republican cross the aisle, if not for their own political advantage? The truth is that they’re not going to unless their deeply conservative constituents in their heavily Republican gerrymandered districts force them to. That’s not going to happen anytime soon as their liberal-blaming constituents are just looking for an excuse to blame away their colossal military fuck up.
